On October 4, 1957, the Russians launched the world’s first space satellite. The satellite, named “Sputnik 1″ was a metal sphere with a diameter of 58 cm, a weight of 83.6 kg and 4 protruding antennae. The news broke all around the world like a bombshell. It was “the beginning of the space age”.

On April 17, 1958, the World Exhibition opened in Brussels with the “Atomium”, an enormous 102m high structure, as its central feature. The 9 metal spheres, each with a diameter of 18m, were linked by means of connecting tunnels 23m in length. The “Atomiun” represents a metal crystal 165 billion times its normal size. Once inside this gigantic model, visitors can use the connecting tunnels to move from one sphere to another.

Around the end of the 50s and the beginning of the 60s, the Sputnik and the Atomium proved to be a source of inspiration. The result is the Sputnik, designed by Paul de Haan.

Captured inside the Suck UK Sun Jar are highly efficient solar cells, rechargeable battery, and low energy LED lamps. When the Sun Jar is placed in sunlight, the solar cell creates an electrical current that charges the battery over a few hours. This energy is then used at night to power the three LED lamps inside the jar.

The light is diffused by the frosted jar and give the appearance of sunlight emitting from within (warm-colored LED lights are used to give a more natural and warm light). You may have noticed that there is no switch on the sun jar – in fact, there are no visible controls at all! There is a clever light sensor inside that automatically activates the lights when it gets dark or lights are turned out! Mason Jars are not only beautiful, but by their very nature they are completely watertight – so the Sun Jar can happily be left outside in any weather conditions. A perfect garden light or night light for a kids bedroom!

We have already covered why flameless candles are a must for any home because they are safe and cost efficient. But they are also much more environmentally friendly than regular candles, especially tea lights. Using flameless candles, especially rechargeable tea lights can actually help you to reduce your carbon footprint.

Have you ever thought about how much energy is consumed making those tiny candles that burn for an hour or two and are then thrown away? And what about the metal casings? Not to mention the wax and wick. Thinking that because they are small means that their waste can’t make a difference is like ignoring a leaking faucet because you think a few drips can’t make a difference to your water bill. Wrong!

Anyone who has had a leaky faucet will know that just a single drip, occurring regularly enough, can add hundreds to your water bill over time. In the same way, when you put together the waste produced by the millions of disposable tea lights sold in the US each year it adds up to tons of metal, and vats and vats of wax which is produced simply to burn away to nothing.

Most disposable tea light candles are made in large factories in Asia, where the majority of the world’s carbon pollution comes from due to poor regulation. They are then shipped hundreds of miles to the US, and you can bet the huge container ships aren’t using bio-fuel or unleaded gas!

Save the planet one little light at a time by investing in flameless, rechargeable candles.

Obama Wants You to Buy Energy Efficient Lighting

Who Says Low Energy Lighting Looks Boring?

Who Says Low Energy Lighting Looks Boring?

President Obama announced recently that energy efficiency was a high priority for his administration, with a special focus on increasing the use of energy efficient lamps and lighting in our homes. He is supporting an energy efficiency bill designed to reduce emissions, energy consumption (and costs) and ultimately to help prevent global warming.

His plans to enforce the use of more energy efficient lamps would mean considerable savings for consumers, up to an amazing $4 billion per year.

While change is slow to pass through the bureaucratic process, and official energy efficiency standards for manufacturers are tied up in red tape, Obama said that he was still confident that America could lower its energy consumption without legislation. All that is needed for real change to happen is for consumers to choose energy efficient lighting in their homes and workplaces, and be more aware of their energy consumption.

For example, did you know that most lamps use the same amount of energy when switched off as they do when switched on, as long as they are still plugged in to the wall socket? Many of our energy efficient lamps are designed so that off means off! Our energy efficient lamps can also use up to 90% less energy that standard bulbs. That’s 90% off your bill too.

In trying to get public support for the initiative, President Obama said “I know light bulbs may not seem sexy, but this simple action holds enormous promise because 7 percent of all the energy consumed in America is used to light our homes and businesses.”

Energy efficient light bulbs not sexy? He’s obviously never visited Lamplust!
